Say “Hello” to DeskMat, and “Goodbye” to your messy Desktop.

Hide your Desktop icons manually, or automatically when specific apps are running or come to the foreground. Perfect for clean streams, screen sharing, and distraction-free work.

Now available for purchase on my website, and soon on the Mac App Store, too!

Here's a KDE Plasma 6 power feature you probably had no idea existed.

Hit Meta+T on your keyboard.

You can define tiles on each of your screens.

Now grab a window and hold shift - it will snap to the closest tile!

This way you can arrange windows on your screen(s) in a way that will keep them sharing your screen's area without ever overlapping.

Doing this manually always took so much time and was so fiddly...

You're welcome!

Framework has announced a new desktop based on a powerful AMD APU and equipped up to 128 GB of RAM. They are both advertising that it's a capable system for gaming as well as AI workloads. Is it for you?

My horribly old #desktop #PC is finally starting to die. Currently running a backup (using #zfs send/recv) to my server of one important local dataset.

Now I started looking for new hardware and to my surprise found a "modern" mainboard with a "real" parallel port (internal header, certainly good enough). This really helps with my retro hobby (#C64), years ago I soldered a simple interface cable that allows using a 1541 floppy on the PC, I even ported the #opencbm driver for that from #Linux to #FreeBSD. Without a parallel port, you'd need some complex USB interface instead including a microcontroller and "tons of shit", while the cable for the parallel port basically consists of a few diodes.

Now I wonder one thing: I'd also love to have a #FDC (#floppy drive controller) again. Is there any modern board coming with THAT as well or should I just forget about it?

I'm #bisexual & likely #aromantic as well as rather certainly #nonbinary.
Pronouns are they/them in English tho it gets tricky in languages with grammatical gender.
I've switched to #Linux on #desktop before getting sniped by Copilot but my phone's still in Android's & Google's grasp.
The #cuneiform to the left of my name reads "Child of the cosmos" in #Sumerian & the #hieroglyphs to the right read "primordial" in #AncientEgyptian.

Signal *really* doesn't like having desktop users, do they?

Apparently the only way to get this working without a smartphone is to install their desktop app (which *does* exist—this screenshot is from before I enabled JS) but then also install a third-party tool called "signal-cli" that uses a hacked-up version of Signal to provide functionality like creating an account based on an SMS or voice call.

It's kind of appalling. There's no reason the desktop app couldn't have this functionality. Why are Signal forcing people to use a third-party utility? It's very weird in juxtaposition to their tight central control of Signal in other ways.
