…Convenience wants us to replace actual care and discernment with a machine generated image description which:

- includes text that isn’t present but was in the enclosing post anyway
- is of a cartoon that “May be a cartoon” and isn’t a “photo”
- cannot recognise characterisations central to the satire in the image
- repeats words that are there
- and mistakes drawn elements for non-existent Arabic text

and to tell people who need image descriptions that this is ‘better’

Popping preconceived popover ponderings: "It does a lot in terms of not having to wrangle CSS overflows or z-index clashes. But by itself, it doesn’t do everything you may need for fully accessible custom popovers. It wasn’t meant to, nor should it." #HTML #a11y scottohara.me/blog/2025/03/14/

Are there any Fediverse clients available that support community-driven image alternatives?

For instance, consider a Mastodon post featuring an image that lacks an alternative description. In this case, the user interface (including the version rendered by assistive technologies) identifies #Alt4You proposals in the comment and prompts the reader to browse through them.

As another example, if you edit a post you previously made that did not have an alternative, the user interface can suggest utilizing #Alt4You alternatives that other users have proposed in the comments.

Would this approach make sense? #a11y

I agree with Karl Groves in his Linkedin post that AI can certainly help improve automatic testing and a lot of other things in accessibility *in the future*, but I do not believe it'll allow to test 100% of the WCAG criteria, nor allow tools to make websites accessible, provide fully relevant text alternatives to images and whatnot. Or at least not now. In 10 years, may be even more, may be? 3/4 #a11y #AI

I was thinking of starting a collection of #accessible patterns for the web. Such resources exist already. A million of them. All saying different things.

I think I need a collection of answers to common questions and patterns for common problems that is written in easier language and closer to the real world and patterns you could copy.

Before I start my own list of things, I’d love to know which of the existing ones are worth contributing? #a11y #Accessibility
