The "fedi chick" spams continue because spammers are signing up on Mastodon instances with instant signups available. If you're running a Mastodon instance, please switch signups to approval mode instead.

You can do this at Preferences > Administration > Server Settings > Registrations > Who can sign up, set it to "Approval required for signup" and "require a reason to join", then save changes.

If people keep getting spams from your instance, it may end up defederated.

For denizens of my server, I think I have things working smoothly again. Cross fingers... It appears server was slammed overnight (unclear if this was some exceptionally viral thing, if a thousand Fediverse chicks appeared overnight, if the bridge to Bluesky went haywire, or the traffic on the Fediverse just hit some excess limit). The fix over here was to spawn extra threads for sidekiq and further separate processes (ie instead of combined push/pull, individual push pull processes) #MastoAdmin

Hmm, the hamsters are running as fast as possible on their treadmills today, not sure why we're back up here. Not CPU limited. Maybe just bump up the machine a class in the cloud anyway... Hmm... #MastoAdmin

Hi all. Two items:

1) We’re seeing a growth in coordinated propaganda spam across a number of domains. Where reported, we will block these accounts. Servers that host a number of these accounts will be defederated.

2) To that end, we are seeing some popular servers have absent admins. We will always try to reach out with our concerns, but may end up with having to defederate these servers if the problems are not resolved.

https://archaeo.social has defederated https://social.freysa.ai, which is flooding hashtags such as #Archaeology and #History with repetitive LLM-generated posts.

Why should a Mastodon instance with 13 MAU have a 25 GB database? That's 1,923 MB of post content for each user! Does anyone have or know of a guide for trimming the database more advance than a series of tootctl [statuses|media|accounts] remove statements? #MastoAdmin #Mastodon

We will need to retire the option to use namespaces in Redis (i.e. setting the REDIS_NAMESPACE environment variable) in Mastodon 4.4.

howdy, folks - it's been a bit since our last #hachyderm infra check in.

stuff in motion:

- ditching #terraform cloud & tf for #opentofu and #atlantis. we are just about to import our dev environment and put it through its paces.
- bringing #postgresql under ansible management. the team has been doing awesome work, and we've started to spin up dev nodes using the new playbooks. soon: production!
- moving #DNS zones away from AWS route 53. we chose bunny DNS as our provider and have been doing basic tests in dev. we'll likely prep our records for production this week with a plan for a cutover in one of the coming weekends.

and if you filled out our volunteer form and haven't heard from me in a bit - you're still on the list. we'll onboard a new batch of folks in the next couple of weeks.

If you care about what you're building, don't host your stuff with Hetzner. Don't trust them.

They will take you down without warning and won't answer your queries. For sure, they'll send you an invoice, tho.

Happened before with @Ursalzona and other fediverse servers, happened now with this Peertube instance, and it's best to avoid being their next victim.

Go host your stuff somewhere else. And keep your backup routines working.

The fediverse is more alive than it ever has been. Over 200 of our Sidekiq workers are constantly busy working on jobs, even overnight.

It's beautiful to see the growth of the fediverse over these years.

'Nicole' just took an arrow to the knee. In what seems to be a somewhat persistent scam, 'Nicole' creates profiles at multiple instances, usually with poor moderation. Same PFP, same profile text and goes spamming others with discord links.

I went hunting and sniped a few. They won't be spamming anytime soon again

The "spam wave" with the (now famous) Nicole account underlines how poor the moderation tools are on Mastodon. It's currently not possible to automatically quarantine such profiles… #mastoadmin #fediblock
