kamatahvel🇺🇦
Greetings! I've moved instances so now it's time to rewrite an #intro

I love #languages #linguistics and #etymology. I'm hesitant to list what languages I study as my interests tend to shift, but I know a few phrases in some European languages. Speaking is the hardest part of using a language given that darn real-time compilation aspect, so it's safe to say reading is the easiest to get a grasp of. I've really gotten in to #Latin of late thanks to my dealings with learning plant species.

Speaking of which, I'm also really into #NativePlants, #ReWilding and #Permaculture. I've spent over the past 2 years converting my traditional American hellscape of a lawn into a recovering (thriving, even?) ecosystem of native plants. It's not much, but it's work 🧑‍🌾🚜 Currently I'm tracking over 110 species I've either transplanted or nurtured. How am I tracking that? Well, I'm also into #SoftwareEngineering

For that project, I just built a simple, local CRUD webapp with some mapping functionality for logging where I plant things, how they're doing and some basic info about them. Outside of work I work on a lot of small projects like the one above, but they've all felt so much more interesting than the work I get paid to do. That's how life goes, I suppose. Anyway, brief list of what I've built: DIY 6 Zone Automated Sprinkler system with ball valves (!) controlled by an ESP32 running ESPHome, A local webapp that (among other things) uses diceware to create unique passwords, A Slack bot for friends that admins a game of Cards Against Humanity, I built a web scraper service for a local nonprofit to better collect municipality permit data, I've gone through 3 iterations of installing 5v LED strips on a bike of mine to stay visible, I've probably written countless automations in #HomeAssistant. One thing remains true for most of my projects: I always end up overengineering the solution lol. It's a double-edged sword, but I'm trying to either embrace it or learn when to avoid it, depending on my mood for that day.

Last, let's talk about reading. I love #SciFi, but primarily #HardSciFi. Anything where there's more focus on the technology being used. Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Greg Egan, Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. Always eager to take some book recommendations.

Anyway, I think that's enough of an intro to satisfy the Mastodon.

`Press any key to continue...`

Mark T. Tomczak
Sudden insight:

A project with no future changes has no tech debt. If a piece of software is never going to be changed again, it is what it is and there's nothing to pay down.

Tech debt only exists in the context of planned and unplanned changes.

#softwareengineering

Miguel Afonso Caetano
"The majority of research around Large Language Models (LLM) application to software development has been on the subject of code generation. There is little literature on LLMs' impact on requirements engineering (RE), which deals with the process of developing and verifying the system requirements. Within RE, there is a subdiscipline of requirements elicitation, which is the practice of discovering and documenting requirements for a system from users, customers, and other stakeholders. In this analysis, we compare LLM's ability to elicit requirements of a software system, as compared to that of a human expert in a time-boxed and prompt-boxed study. We found LLM-generated requirements were evaluated as more aligned (+1.12) than human-generated requirements with a trend of being more complete (+10.2%). Conversely, we found users tended to believe that solutions they perceived as more aligned had been generated by human experts. Furthermore, while LLM-generated documents scored higher and performed at 720x the speed, their cost was, on average, only 0.06% that of a human expert. Overall, these findings indicate that LLMs will play an increasingly important role in requirements engineering by improving requirements definitions, enabling more efficient resource allocation, and reducing overall project timelines."

https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.19297

#AI #GenerativeAI #LLMs #SoftwareDevelopment #SoftwareEngineering #RequirementsEngineering

Will Pettersson
I may have some spare time in my life come July or August, and I'm looking to see what opportunities are around. I'm currently a researcher and software engineer; I publish algorithm research, and then implement algorithms to extend my impact, with a focus on graph-based algorithms, resource allocation problems, and using tools from operations research. I work in C++ and Python mainly, but am starting to pick up Rust, and I'm comfortable with most other languages. I also have experience with most devops tools and dabble with sysadmin work, but my networking certifications are expired.

I'm based in Glasgow, but can do remote work based in the UK, the EU, or Australia, and am looking for short-term and/or part-time opportunities come July or August. I'm not at this point looking for recruiters, only actual opportunities. Ideally I'm looking for green opportunities, either commerical or public sector, but I also have an interest in astronomy or health care opportunities.

I hold a PhD., and since keywords may be useful here are some tools I work with on a daily basis: Python, Flask, C++, C, docker, linear programming, integer programming, operations research.
