Since I’m currently fiddling with SuSE 6.4 which I have running in a VM (and soon on hardware again, I hope), here are some screenshots from #GIMP 1.1 on SuSE Linux 6.4. Around 25 years old.

The "Load Image" dialog. Good old blocky GTK 1. Lots of beveled pseudo-3D borders.
Opened an image, added the text "Hello, world!" The layer dialog in front of the main window. (The screen is 800x600 pixels in size, which is too small to have lots of tools open.)

Narrowing this down:

  • It appears that IF a blur filter is applied to an image, ON the image itself, using the pop-up window, and you attempt to paint on the image after the fact, GIMP will continue to render an updated blur on the image, with the paint appearing BEHIND the blur... thus the CPU lag.

  • If you however undo the blur, re-select the area, and choose to Repeat the filter, then paint on that, the brush will paint OVER the filter (instead of behind), and the filter will not be re-rendering the preview output.

I cannot tell if this is intentional or not.

oh lord GIMP 3.0 has some bugs to squash methinks...

  • laggy drawing with paint/pencil tool
  • filters are shifted up/down on the image if the image is cropped and is auto centered in view
  • zoom function completely different, far more granularity but utterly frustrating to use now

GIMP 3.0 includes a new experimental selection tool "Paint Select." This tool allows you to use a brush to progressively select an object or area in an image. While it is a very nice feature, it still has some stability issues. Therefore, it is not visible by default. You will need to enable it in the Playground section of the Preferences Dialog to test it out. You can access this section by running GIMP 3.0 with the --show-playground flag.

There’s a really shite argument in their FAQ that says that they’d have to immediately rewrite all their APIs if they renamed it. Which means ho hi ho they never can. God forbid they just change the public name first, then slowly create synonyms for APIs, and finally do a search and replace. #GIMP @GIMP

Ich habe es erst jetzt gesehen aber ich nutze @GIMP auch rel. selten. Die lange Entwicklungszeit ist nichts per-se was negatives. Für Fotos & Grafiken auf Webseiten lässt es sich mMn gut nutzen.
